pizza is one of those meals that happens at least once a week in our house.
sometimes it is a planned pizza night. sometimes it is a “i forgot dinner was my responsibility again” pizza night. either way, having homemade sauce tucked in the freezer makes the whole thing feel a lot less dramatic.
i started making pizza sauce in bigger batches because if i am already opening cans, seasoning sauce, and making a mess, i might as well make enough for future me too. this recipe is simple, freezer-friendly, and made with ingredients i usually already have on hand.
it is thick, flavorful, not overly sweet, and easy to portion out for homemade pizza nights. i like freezing mine in 10 oz portions, which is usually enough for two pizzas with a little extra for crust dipping.
because obviously the crust needs a dip situation.

why i make pizza sauce ahead
we eat pizza at least once a week, and making every single piece from scratch every single time is not always realistic.
but having the sauce already done? that is the kind of homemade convenience i can actually keep up with.
this is one of those small swaps that makes dinner feel easier without relying on another jar from the grocery store. nothing fancy. nothing complicated. just sauce made ahead and waiting in the freezer for the next pizza night.

homemade freezer pizza sauce recipe
ingredients
- 2 cans crushed tomatoes, 28 oz each
- 1 can tomato paste, 12 oz
- 2 tablespoons italian seasoning
- 2 teaspoons dried oregano
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons onion powder
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 3 teaspoons salt
instructions
- add the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste to a large pot.
- stir in the italian seasoning, oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, sugar, and salt.
- bring the sauce to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat.
- let it simmer for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until everything is combined and the sauce thickens slightly.
- taste and adjust if needed.
- let the sauce cool completely before freezing.
- portion into freezer bags or containers. i like using 10 oz portions.
- label with the date and freeze flat for easy storage.
how i freeze it
i portion the sauce into 10 oz bags, flatten them out, and freeze them stacked.
freezing them flat makes them thaw faster and saves space in the freezer, which matters when your freezer is already full of bread, muffins, pancakes, cookie dough, and whatever else you convinced yourself was “just a quick batch prep.”
if you prefer reusable storage, you could also freeze the sauce in silicone freezer trays, then pop the portions out and store them in a larger freezer bag once frozen.
one 10 oz portion works well for our pizza nights because i usually make two pizzas and still like having a little extra for dipping.
how to use frozen pizza sauce
to use, pull one bag from the freezer and thaw it in the fridge overnight, or set it in a bowl of warm water if you forgot.
spread over pizza dough, add toppings, and bake as usual.
you can also use it for:
- pizza rolls
- pizza sliders
- dipping breadsticks
- freezer pizzas
- quick pasta sauce in a pinch
notes
this sauce is intentionally simple. it is not trying to be fancy restaurant sauce. it is everyday homemade pizza sauce that does its job well and keeps pizza night moving.
and honestly, that is kind of the whole point.
homemade does not have to mean starting from zero every night. sometimes it just means making one thing ahead so future dinner feels a little easier.
