The Pizza Sauce I Keep in the Freezer for Pizza Night

Pizza happens at least once a week in our house.

Sometimes it is planned. Sometimes it is a “right, dinner is still my job” situation.

Either way, having homemade pizza sauce already in the freezer makes the whole thing much easier.

why i make a bigger batch

I started making it in bigger batches because if I’m already opening cans, seasoning sauce, and dirtying a pot, I might as well make enough for future pizza nights too.

This version is thick, savory, not overly sweet, and made with ingredients I usually already have on hand.

homemade freezer pizza sauce recipe

ingredients

  • 2 cans crushed tomatoes, 28 oz each
  • 1 can tomato paste, 12 oz
  • 2 tablespoons italian seasoning
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 teaspoons salt

instructions

  1. add the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste to a large pot.
  2. stir in the italian seasoning, oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, sugar, and salt.
  3. bring the sauce to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat.
  4. let it simmer for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until everything is combined and the sauce thickens slightly.
  5. taste and adjust if needed.

how i portion and freeze it

Let the sauce cool completely before freezing. I portion it into 10 oz bags, label them with the date, flatten them out, and freeze them stacked.

one 10 oz portion works well for our pizza nights because i usually make two pizzas and still like having a little extra for dipping.

Because obviously the crust needs a dip situation.

freezing them flat makes them thaw faster and saves space in the freezer, which matters when your freezer is already full of bread, muffins, pancakes, cookie dough, and whatever else you convinced yourself was “just a quick batch prep.”

if you prefer reusable storage, you could also freeze the sauce in silicone freezer trays, then pop the portions out and store them in a larger freezer bag once frozen.

putting it to work on pizza night

To use, pull one bag from the freezer and thaw it in the fridge overnight.

Spread over pizza dough, add toppings, and bake as usual. Our one-dough pizza + pretzels recipe is a natural place to start.

you can also use it for:

  • pizza rolls
  • pizza sliders
  • dipping breadsticks
  • freezer pizzas
  • quick pasta sauce in a pinch

FAQ

How much sauce do you use for two pizzas?

One 10-ounce portion usually covers our two pizzas with a little left for crust dipping. That is our household portion, not a rule for every pizza.

Do I have to use disposable freezer bags?

No. The reusable option is silicone freezer trays; once the portions are frozen, transfer them to a larger freezer bag.

the rooted pantry verdict: MAKE + STOCK

This is the kind of homemade convenience I want more of in my freezer: one batch now, easier pizza nights later. If I’m already dirtying the pot, making enough to stock future pizza nights is worth it.
